Continuous drone strikes by Russia in and around Kyiv have persisted for the fifth consecutive day, causing air raid sirens to disrupt the daily lives of millions of residents.
On Monday, the attacks resulted in injuries to four individuals and damages to various structures, including warehouse facilities, an apartment building, and a retail establishment in the Kyiv region, as reported by regional Gov. Tymur Tkachenko on Telegram.
Over the past days, Kyiv and its neighboring areas have been plagued by numerous drones, many of which are powered by jet engines, leading to casualties, property damage, and disruptions. A recent Russian drone strike on an ammunition depot triggered explosions that claimed the lives of 38 people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy highlighted on Sunday that the relentless drone attacks were strategically aimed at wearing down the morale of Ukrainians. Zelenskiy stated that within a four-day period, Russia deployed nearly 1,500 drones against Ukraine, with more than half of them being jet-powered.
Furthermore, a Russian strike caused a fire at a terminal operated by private courier service Nova Poshta in the southern Odesa region, as announced by Gov. Oleh Kiper on Monday. In the city of Kryvyi Rih, an industrial business was targeted by a jet-powered drone attack, resulting in injuries to two individuals, according to a local official on Monday.
Both Ukraine and Russia have escalated their attacks in recent weeks, focusing on economic targets such as major e-commerce entities and retailers. Russia has specifically targeted warehouses belonging to Ukraine’s leading supermarket chains, primary postal service, and home goods stores.
Ukraine has also retaliated by targeting Russian infrastructure. A logistics hub in Russia’s Yekaterinburg was subjected to a drone attack, as confirmed by the local governor on Monday.
Air raid sirens in Kyiv
Russian air attacks have escalated during the summer months, taking advantage of Ukraine’s limited interceptors capable of neutralizing ballistic missiles. The increased utilization of daytime drone assaults has introduced a new form of disruption for residents in Kyiv, leading to interruptions in public transportation and daily routines.
During alert periods, numerous passengers were left stranded on crowded metro platforms in Kyiv as train services were temporarily halted from crossing the Dnipro River.
