“Ryanair Criticizes ‘Illegal’ Strike, Passengers Stranded”

Published on

Ryanair, the budget airline, has released a statement following the sudden cancellation of numerous flights, leaving passengers stranded. The airline strongly criticized what they referred to as an ‘illegal wildcat’ strike conducted by Belgian air traffic controllers on June 2.

The strike led to the cancellation of 100 Ryanair flights to and from Charleroi and Zaventem Airports, affecting almost 20,000 passengers. Ryanair expressed discontent over the lack of prior notice given by the Belgian air traffic controllers, impacting travelers who were caught off guard by the sudden disruptions.

Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, emphasized the importance of providing adequate notice before strikes to allow airlines to adjust schedules and minimize inconvenience to passengers. The airline highlighted the need for fair treatment and consideration of the passengers’ travel plans, especially families with young children who were affected by the unexpected flight cancellations.

Separately, Ryanair passengers may face further disruptions due to a general strike in Portugal on June 3. This strike, prompted by labor reforms proposed by the Portuguese government, is anticipated to impact various sectors across the country, potentially affecting around 500 flights from different airlines.

While EasyJet foresees some passenger disturbances, Ryanair has assured its operations will proceed as scheduled despite the looming strike. This strike will mark the second general strike in Portugal in recent months, reflecting ongoing tensions surrounding labor reforms and their societal implications.
