Rylan Clark was taken by surprise when questioned about his friends facing public backlash on the new ITV show, The Assembly. The established entertainer, aged 36, was interrogated on the novel program featuring interviewers with autism and neurodivergence, which premiered recently.
Known for his work on Radio 2, Rylan has a circle of well-known acquaintances. However, earlier this year, his former collaborator, Scott Mills, aged 53, was dismissed from the BBC following allegations of serious misconduct involving a minor in 2016. Mills has affirmed his cooperation with the police inquiry and intends to pursue legal action against the BBC for wrongful termination.
Although Rylan, who previously co-hosted the Eurovision Song Contest with Scott, has not publicly commented on his friend’s dismissal, he reacted with astonishment when asked about the situation of some of his celebrity companions on The Assembly.
During the interview, Rylan was asked by Jacob how he handles it when a celebrity friend is ostracized. After a moment of contemplation, Rylan expressed, “It’s really challenging… Especially because some of them are not just colleagues – they are genuinely close friends. Ultimately, if someone has erred, I understand why they cannot continue their work.”
While refraining from naming anyone, Rylan added, “However, in today’s society, there is a trend of people targeting and ‘canceling’ others simply because they can.”
Encouraging individuals to seek deeper understanding beyond surface information, Rylan emphasized the importance of questioning decisions. As Jacob concluded the conversation, Rylan quipped, “It’s like a surprise box. You never know what’s coming next, do you?”
His remarks follow reports that Mills’ colleagues were left stunned by his dismissal.
Rylan is the latest public figure to face probing questions on The Assembly. In addition to addressing ‘cancel culture,’ he candidly discussed his past infidelity towards his ex-husband, Dan Neal, during their divorce.
