“Sainsbury’s Goes White: Brown Eggs Dropped for Sustainability”

Published on

In response to a significant decision by Sainsbury’s, both Morrisons and Waitrose have reacted. The leading supermarket chain in the UK has announced that it will discontinue the sale of brown eggs and exclusively offer white-shelled eggs under its own-brand range. Sainsbury’s stated that this change aligns with its sustainability goals and aim to achieve net zero targets by 2035, as white eggs have a lower carbon footprint compared to brown eggs.

However, Morrisons and Waitrose have confirmed that they will continue to stock brown eggs, emphasizing the importance of providing customers with the choice to select their preferred option. A spokesperson from Waitrose mentioned that the retailer can maintain high welfare standards and reduce environmental impact simultaneously.

Morrisons also committed to keeping brown eggs in its product lineup to allow customers the freedom to choose the egg color they prefer, stating that customers are increasingly seeking sustainable shopping options.

Sainsbury’s move is part of its efforts to reach net zero targets by 2035. The company highlighted that white eggs, sourced from white-feathered hens, have longer laying lives and lower feed requirements, resulting in the same output with a reduced carbon footprint. Research conducted by SAC Consulting revealed that white eggs have a 12.7% lower carbon footprint.

Sainsbury’s aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its operations by 2035 and extend this goal to its entire supply chain by 2050. A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s emphasized that white eggs offer the same taste and nutritional benefits as brown eggs but contribute to lower carbon emissions and improved welfare for the hens.

A representative from Waitrose reiterated the commitment to animal welfare and quality standards, promoting British eggs from reputable, high-welfare farms. The company is on track to achieve net zero emissions across its UK farms by 2035, demonstrating the ability to uphold high welfare standards while reducing environmental impact.
