Sam Fender and Olivia Dean have made history by breaking a 32-year-old record for the longest-running Number 1 single by a British act on the UK chart. Their popular ballad, “Rein Me In,” held the top spot on the Official UK Singles Chart for 16 non-consecutive weeks, surpassing the previous record set by Scottish band Wet Wet Wet in 1994.
This achievement also puts them on par with Canadian icon Bryan Adams, who achieved a similar feat with his classic hit “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” in 1991. The duo released “Rein Me In” in June 2025, which was originally a track for Sam’s third studio album before being transformed into a pop-rock ballad.
Aside from breaking the Number 1 record, Sam and Olivia also set new milestones for the longest consecutive run in the UK Top 40 and the highest number of weeks in the UK Top 10 for a non-Christmas single. The song delves into the complexities of a relationship’s breakdown through a raw, two-way conversation.
Expressing his excitement, Sam mentioned how watching the song break chart records has been surreal and a reason to celebrate. He credited Olivia for adding an alternative narrative that made the song universally relatable and catchy. The track’s success could potentially challenge the record for the longest run at Number 1, currently held by Frankie Laine’s “I Believe” at 18 weeks.
In other achievements, Olivia dominated the Brit Awards earlier this year, winning Song of the Year with Sam and being named Best New Artist at the 2026 Grammy Awards. During her emotional acceptance speech, she acknowledged the support of her team and family, highlighting her journey as a granddaughter of an immigrant.
