“Santander Ends Annual Fee Statements, Introduces 8% Savings Account”

Published on

Santander has decided to discontinue sending customers an annual statement detailing their incurred fees. This statement typically outlines charges accrued over the previous year, including overdraft fees and foreign transaction fees on Santander current accounts. For instance, Santander’s arranged overdrafts come with a standard variable rate of 39.94%. The annual fee statement also reflects any earned interest.

Beginning in August, Santander will no longer issue this statement; however, customers can conveniently review their fees through online or mobile banking services. Regular bank statements also disclose account fees. On a positive note, Santander recently introduced a new regular savings account offering an 8% interest rate.

This savings account allows individuals to deposit a fixed amount monthly in exchange for a higher interest rate. The account features an 8% rate with a 5% bonus for the initial 12 months, subsequently reducing to 3%. The rates are subject to change. Customers can save up to £200 monthly, potentially accumulating up to £2,504 with interest in a year and £5,018 by the second year.

Withdrawals from the regular saver incur no penalties, but funds can only be transferred to a Santander current account. This exclusive offer is available solely to Santander current account holders. The decision to eliminate the annual fee statement follows Santander’s intention to reduce costs by over 500 million euros (£433 million) through increased utilization of artificial intelligence (AI).

Banco Santander aims to achieve more than one billion euros (£860 billion) in additional revenues and cost savings from AI by 2028, with a significant portion anticipated from cost reductions. The savings will be derived from automation, productivity enhancements, and process streamlining. The company has not disclosed the potential impact on jobs resulting from this initiative. No specific job reduction program related to AI implementation has been announced by the group.
