Britain’s Special Boat Service (SBS) is on standby to support a potential ground assault by US forces amid escalating tensions in the Iran conflict.

More than 2,500 US Marines are currently en route to the Gulf, ready to seize Kharg Island in the Strait of Hormuz if instructed by President Donald Trump. Equipped with tanks, artillery, and fighter jets, the Marine Expeditionary Unit is poised for action.

According to a defense source cited by the Daily Star Sunday, the SBS is well-versed in the Gulf region and could engage in reconnaissance missions ahead of any potential invasion. Specializing in sabotage operations like placing mines on ships and conducting covert underwater activities, the SBS could offer expertise and support to US Navy SEALs.

Utilizing swimmer delivery vehicles, SBS operatives frequently deploy frogmen into enemy territories to assist in planning amphibious assaults.

The developments follow Iran’s objection to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to allow US bombers to use RAF bases for offensive purposes, with Iranian officials warning of potential risks to British lives.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized Iran’s right to self-defense, criticizing the UK’s involvement in perceived aggressive actions against Iran. Iran’s reported missile launch towards the joint UK-US Diego Garcia base raised concerns over Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities.

President Trump expressed disappointment in the UK’s delayed approval for US base usage, urging a swifter response. While hinting at potential de-escalation with Iran, Trump emphasized the need for other countries to ensure security in the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Trump reiterated on his Truth Social platform that guarding the Strait of Hormuz should be a collective effort among nations that rely on it, stressing the ultimate goal of eliminating Iran’s threat. He also hinted at reducing US military presence in the Middle East as objectives are close to being achieved.
