“Scotland Braces for Snow & Ice Alert”

Published on

The Met Office has issued a snow and ice warning for five regions. The yellow weather alert covers parts of central and north-west Scotland starting at midnight and continuing until 9 am on Friday.

According to the Met Office, the warning indicates potential disruptions on roads and railways, leading to longer travel times by road, bus, and train services. Icy patches are expected on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, posing a risk of slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Blustery wintry showers are anticipated to affect the mentioned areas of Scotland on Thursday afternoon and evening. The intensity of showers is expected to increase during the latter part of the night, with 2 to 5cm of snow likely across the region and up to 10cm in higher areas above 350 meters. The snow showers are forecasted to ease off by Friday morning.

The national weather service advises individuals to plan their routes carefully, check for road closures, and anticipate delays in public transportation. Drivers are urged to prepare for possible delays by carrying essentials such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, torch, ice scraper or de-icer, warning triangle, high-visibility vest, and an in-car phone charger.

Additionally, the Met Office has issued two yellow wind warnings for Thursday. The first warning covers Northern Ireland until noon, with southwesterly winds expected to bring gusts of up to 50mph, reaching 60mph in some areas, accompanied by heavy rain briefly. The winds are projected to subside by late morning.

The second warning, effective until 8 pm, encompasses parts of northern England, the Midlands, Scotland, and Wales. Gusts of 50 to 55mph are anticipated widely, with coastal regions possibly experiencing gusts up to 70mph. The winds are expected to diminish from the north throughout the day.

Looking ahead to Friday, the Met Office predicts a cold and windy day with a mix of sunshine and blustery showers. Showers may intensify, leading to more sustained rain and snow in some areas, particularly over hills.

In the three-to-five day outlook, the Met Office forecasts a frosty start on Saturday followed by sunshine and scattered showers, some possibly wintry. Lighter winds are expected. Sunday may bring rain followed by showers, including some hill snow. More rain is predicted to arrive in the west on Monday, with winds picking up again.
