A man from Scotland who was involved in the conflict in Ukraine against Russia has gone missing and is feared to be deceased.

Stefan Sivers, aged 35 and hailing from Aberdeen, is believed to have passed away in the Kharkiv region. Sivers had journeyed to Ukraine in December of the previous year after expressing his support for the country on social media starting in 2022.

The Foreign Office has confirmed his disappearance. A spokesperson for the FCDO stated, “We are assisting the family of a British citizen who is missing in Ukraine and are liaising with local authorities.”

Travel to Ukraine and its neighboring regions is advised against by the Foreign Office, emphasizing the limited capacity of the British government to aid British nationals in Ukraine.

Following the initiation of conflict by Putin’s invading forces in February 2022, two selfies of Mr. Sivers posing alongside a graphic displaying the Ukrainian flag were revealed on his Facebook account, as reported by the Daily Record.

In one of his posts, he wrote, “It ain’t 1918 why should man be in the trenches.”

While his social media profiles indicate a background in the restaurant industry, there is no evidence of him having served in the military, which is typical for many mercenaries in Ukraine.

The FCDO website also warns that British nationals engaging in the conflict are at risk, with cases of British citizens fighting in Ukraine having been killed or captured.

Moreover, British nationals who enlist in the International Legion or Ukraine Armed Forces from May 18, 2024, are obligated to serve a minimum of six months and are not permitted to exit Ukraine during this period.

The British government’s capacity to assist individuals in such situations is severely restricted, including the inability to arrange their departure from Ukraine, provide medical repatriation, or terminate their military service contract.
