Season 2 of the show “Rivals” has premiered on the streaming platform Disney+, featuring a touching tribute to the late Dame Jilly Cooper in its first episode.
In a poignant moment at the end of the episode, a black and white title card displays alongside a photograph of a young Dame Jilly, elegantly dressed in a black outfit with fishnet tights. The tribute reads simply: “Dame Jilly Cooper, 1937-2025.”
Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins shared during a Q&A screening that Dame Jilly’s passing during the production of season 2 deeply impacted the cast and crew. He expressed that creating the series was a way to honor her, highlighting her influence on the show.
Dame Jilly, a renowned bestselling author, passed away at the age of 88 on October 5, 2025, following a fatal head injury from a fall at her residence. Her literary journey began in journalism, leading to the publication of her debut book, “How to Stay Married,” in 1969.
Best known for her popular series, “The Rutshire Chronicles,” which includes books like “Riders,” “Rivals,” and “Polo,” Dame Jilly received the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2024 New Year Honours. Additionally, the Jilly Cooper Prize was established in 2025 to commemorate her comedic fiction contributions.
Dominic fondly remembered Dame Jilly’s involvement in the series, emphasizing her keen insights and humor. He highlighted her active participation and camaraderie on set, underscoring her remarkable presence and intellect.
Viewers can now enjoy the first three episodes of “Rivals” season 2 on Disney+, with new episodes released weekly.
