“Serial Child Rapist Sentenced to 18 More Years”

Published on

A convicted sex offender already serving a 16-year prison term for his heinous crimes has been given an additional 18-year sentence for sexually assaulting and raping two children.

Paul Tyler, described as “grotesque,” confessed to 11 more offenses following a lengthy investigation by Humberside Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People Unit. The case unfolded in August 2022 when a man approached Bridlington Police Station and revealed that Tyler had sexually assaulted him multiple times during his childhood.

Detectives conducted extensive inquiries into the “complex, historical sexual offenses,” gathering witness testimonies, victim impact statements, and collaborating with other law enforcement agencies to strengthen the case against the 66-year-old offender. The police commended the remarkable courage of those who stepped forward.

Tyler, previously from Scarborough, pleaded guilty in December 2024 to five counts of raping a boy under 13 and sexually assaulting another boy under 13. The sentencing was delayed due to a report received a month earlier from a woman disclosing her childhood sexual abuse. Tyler faced additional charges, including two counts of involving a girl under 13 in sexual activities, rape of a girl under 13, sexual assault of a girl under 13, and assault by penetration of a girl under 13.

Having already been serving a 16-year sentence for previous child sexual offenses since 2012, Tyler will now spend an extra 18 years incarcerated.

Detective Constable Clare Gascoigne, the investigating officer at Hull Crown Court, praised the bravery of the victims who reported Tyler’s abuse from their childhood. She highlighted the critical role of support services like The Blue Door in empowering victims to engage with the legal process and emphasized the importance of reporting historical child sexual abuse to prevent further harm.

Gascoigne encouraged all abuse survivors to speak out, assuring them that their voices would be heard, supported, and taken seriously.
