A man previously convicted of rape attacked a student with a knife after being granted day release by the Parole Board for completing prison sex offender programs. Neil Trennan, aged 61, received his third life sentence for following a woman into her home with the intent of committing a violent rape while on unaccompanied leave from prison. Trennan had a history of violence, including hitting a woman with a brick during a previous day release in 2002.
Judge Jeremy Richardson KC expressed concern at Sheffield Crown Court, stating that it may never be safe to release the serial sex offender and questioning the decision to allow him unsupervised leave. Trennan’s recent application highlighted his progress in prison programs but deemed him unfit for open conditions due to risk factors such as a sense of entitlement to sex, a propensity for violence, and a lack of consideration for consequences.
Trennan had previously served two life sentences for rape and had a history of violent offenses. His behavior included breaking into homes, using violence, and demonstrating a sexual interest in violence. Despite these red flags, Trennan was allowed unsupervised leave from HMP North Sea Camp, leading to the latest attack in July. The victim described Trennan as emotionless and forceful during the assault.
Following the incident, Trennan was sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in prison, with Judge Richardson KC condemning him as a sexual deviant aroused by violence. The prosecutor revealed that Trennan admitted to targeting the woman with the intention of committing a violent rape. The victim managed to fight him off and escape, leading to Trennan’s arrest three days later.
The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the severity of the crimes and expressed sympathy for the victims. They stated their commitment to reviewing the case and strengthening processes and policies as needed.
