Sir Geoff Hurst Leads Campaign to Save British Fish & Chip Shops

England’s iconic figure, Sir Geoff Hurst, is advocating for the preservation of traditional British fish and chip shops, which are facing closure at an alarming rate. The beloved takeaway industry is under significant strain, with hundreds of establishments up for sale due to escalating costs. Factors such as soaring energy bills, higher staff expenses, surging prices of cod and haddock, global tensions affecting fishing fleets, and the overall cost of living crisis have created immense financial pressure for business owners over the past year and a half.

Speaking on National Fish and Chips day, Sir Geoff emphasized the importance of supporting these establishments to prevent their closure. Industry leaders are urging shops to incorporate more locally sourced fish varieties like hake, coley, monkfish, rock salmon, and sea bass to shield themselves from the volatility of imported fish.

The football legend highlighted the cultural significance of fish and chips in the nation’s identity and called for fans to make it their go-to dish during the World Cup to support the team. Collaborating with Poppies Fish & Chips, Sir Geoff introduced the ‘Sir Geoff Hurst Hat-trick Special’ meal to promote chippies nationwide. He expressed concern over the declining preference for fish and chips among fans, urging them to opt for this traditional dish while cheering on England.

Despite there being 10,000 fish and chips shops in the UK, there are fears that this number could halve in the coming years, with approximately 1,500 closures in the past three years. Experts are suggesting strategies to sustain these businesses, with a focus on utilizing UK-caught seafood to boost the fishing industry and support local economies.

The collaboration between industry stakeholders and the promotion of British-grown produce offer potential solutions to the challenges faced by fish and chip shops. By prioritizing domestic seafood sources, stakeholders aim to create a more resilient and sustainable food system that benefits local communities and businesses alike.
