Tense moments unfolded as Sir Keir Starmer made an appearance to address local Jewish leaders today. Around 200 people gathered, some pushing forward and being restrained by a large police presence. They waited outside while the Prime Minister’s visit at the community center extended beyond the anticipated duration.
While some attendees were pleasantly surprised and appreciative of Starmer’s visit to Golders Green and the extended time spent there, a significant portion of the crowd displayed anger. Similar to the previous day’s incident where Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley faced heckling, the frustrations of the crowd were directed at figures of authority, including Starmer.
During the event, a man intervened to defend Starmer against protestors chanting derogatory remarks. He emphasized the importance of mindful speech, considering the presence of media and cameras. The verbal confrontation lasted for about 20 minutes, only ceasing when Starmer’s vehicle exited the premises en route to Downing St, with bemused police officers observing the exchange.
The protests featured organized chants reminiscent of football gatherings as the Prime Minister’s convoy arrived at Pearl House in Golders Green. Some chanted slogans like “Keir Starmer’s a traitor,” while others attempted to redirect the anger away from certain political figures. Following Starmer’s departure, additional police officers were deployed to ensure his safe exit.
Amid the commotion, there were calls for Starmer to show himself, met with contrasting responses from supporters highlighting his engagement with the community. After the protest concluded, some individuals remained to express gratitude towards law enforcement for their presence and assistance.
