“Sister’s Murder Solved: Acquitted Man Jailed for Rape”

Published on

On March 11, 2011, a shocking revelation was made by Andy van den Hurk on his Facebook profile, confessing to the murder of his sister. This admission came 16 years after his step-sister, Nicole, went missing at the age of 15 while riding her bike to work at a nearby shopping center in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Despite her disappearance, she never arrived at her workplace, and later that same day, her belongings were found abandoned in the area.

A month later, Nicole’s lifeless body was discovered in a nearby forest, brutally assaulted and stabbed multiple times. The case remained unsolved for years, garnering national attention in the Netherlands. Despite extensive efforts and public involvement in the search for answers, no one was ever charged in connection to her tragic death, and gradually, the case grew cold over time.

In 1996, a breakthrough seemed imminent when a person associated with the van den Hurk family was arrested for drug-related offenses, claiming coercion by individuals linked to Nicole’s murder. However, law enforcement authorities doubted his account, leading to no significant progress in the investigation.

Years passed, and the memory of Nicole’s murder began to fade from public consciousness as detectives shifted their focus to other cases. In 2004, a cold case review was initiated, but no new evidence surfaced. Frustrated by the lack of progress, Andy, now residing in the UK, confessed to the crime and was arrested by British police before being extradited back to the Netherlands.

After a brief detention, Andy was released due to insufficient evidence tying him to the crime. He later retracted his confession, expressing his desire to have Nicole’s body exhumed for DNA testing, emphasizing his emotional connection to his late sister and his ongoing grief.

In a surprising turn of events in September 2011, authorities exhumed Nicole’s remains for forensic analysis, which revealed DNA traces belonging to two individuals, including her former boyfriend and an unidentified individual. The unknown DNA matched a 46-year-old man named Jos de G, a convicted rapist with a history of psychiatric issues.

Subsequently, in April 2014, Jos de G was charged with the rape and manslaughter of Nicole. Despite arguments from the defense suggesting a consensual encounter, de G was acquitted of murder and sentenced to five years in prison solely for the rape conviction. This controversial verdict was upheld by the Dutch Supreme Court in June 2020, bringing a sense of closure to a long-standing case marked by tragedy and legal complexities.
