Lindsay Vonn, aged 41, has recently undergone a second surgical procedure on her leg following a serious fall during the downhill event at the 2026 Winter Olympics. This marked her return to the Winter Olympics after an eight-year hiatus, during which she made a remarkable comeback in 2025 following a five-year absence from the sport. Despite a recent ACL injury just before heading to the Games in Italy, Vonn chose to compete.
The fall on Sunday resulted in Vonn sustaining a broken leg, leading to immediate surgery. Subsequently, it has been revealed that she underwent another operation on Monday morning. The experienced skier required a stabilizing procedure initially and then underwent a ‘double operation’ to address the femur fracture in her left leg with external fixation.
The surgical interventions took place at Ca’ Foncello Hospital, the primary medical facility in Treviso, following Vonn’s transfer from Codivilla Hospital in Cortina D’Ampezzo.
In a statement released on social media on Monday evening, Vonn recounted the incident and clarified that a slight miscalculation during the race caused the accident. She emphasized that her previous ACL injury and medical history were not contributing factors to the crash. Despite the disappointment of not achieving her Olympic dream, Vonn expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete and acknowledged the inherent risks in downhill ski racing.
Encouraging resilience and embracing challenges, Vonn urged others to dare greatly and take chances in life, emphasizing that the true failure lies in not attempting at all.
