Simon Thomas, a prominent figure on Sky, has shared a poignant revelation nearly a decade following his spouse’s passing. The well-known host tragically lost his wife, Gemma, at the age of 40 to blood cancer in 2017, just three days after she was diagnosed with adult acute myeloid leukemia.
After the devastating loss, Simon, 53, and his son Ethan, 16, were left grappling with grief. Simon had previously coped with the pain by turning to alcohol, purchasing a bottle of vodka daily. However, Simon recently disclosed that Ethan, who was only eight at the time of his mother’s death, eventually realized his father’s struggle with alcohol as they both mourned, leading Simon to express his feelings of “shame.”
In a recent episode of Matt Willis’ podcast “On The Mend,” Simon revealed how he attempted to conceal his alcohol consumption and acknowledged the negative impact it had on his son. Simon described the weight of the shame he carried from those memories as almost more challenging than overcoming his alcohol addiction.
Three years ago, Simon found love and support from his current partner, Derrina, who has been instrumental in helping him navigate the grief from Gemma’s passing. The couple now has a three-year-old daughter named Talitha and a two-year-old son named Theo.
Reflecting on Gemma’s sudden death, Simon likened the impact to an earthquake, recounting the whirlwind of events that led to her passing within a short span of time. Despite the tragedy, Simon expressed gratitude for Derrina’s role in supporting him and fostering a stable environment for Ethan.
