“Snow Alert: UK Cities Brace for Wintry Blast”

Published on

Recent weather forecasts indicate the possibility of snowfall across extensive areas of Northern Ireland, Wales, England, and Scotland in the upcoming week, with major cities expected to be affected.

The GFS weather model projects the initial snowfall in the south-west of England, South Wales, Northern Ireland, and western Scotland around 3 am on Friday. Cities like Belfast and Swansea are likely to experience snow during this period.

The snow is then anticipated to move eastward, impacting the Midlands and north-west England by approximately 9 am. Cities such as Manchester, Stoke, and Birmingham are expected to witness snow flurries.

By midday, the focus of the snowfall is predicted to shift mainly to Scotland, with Glasgow expected to receive wintry showers around this time.

Snow coverage maps indicate that by 3 pm, significant snow accumulation is projected in most parts of Northern Ireland and Wales, while only the Midlands and north-west England are likely to be affected in England. Western and central Scotland are highlighted with settled snow, depicted by shaded areas.

Temperatures could plummet to as low as -4°C in certain areas of Scotland, according to the data. Northern England, Northern Ireland, and parts of Wales might experience temperatures dropping to -1°C.

The Met Office also suggests the possibility of additional snowfall later this month, but primarily in northern hilly regions.

The Met Office’s forecast for March 6 to March 15 indicates, “High pressure is expected to dominate much of this period, particularly in the southern or southeastern regions of the UK.

“This implies that many areas will experience mostly dry weather with varying cloud cover and some sunshine. The sunniest conditions are likely to be in the south or southeast.

“There may be instances of overnight fog due to clear skies and light winds. Nonetheless, frontal systems are anticipated to impact the north and west of the UK at times, potentially moving further east occasionally, bringing rain, strong winds, and possible hill snow in northern highlands. Temperatures are expected to be near or above average, though sporadic overnight frosts remain possible.”
