Romanian authorities have formally charged social media influencer Andrew Tate with multiple offenses, including trafficking minors, money laundering, engaging in sexual activities with a minor, and tampering with witnesses. His brother Tristan has also been indicted for complicity in the crimes. The Tate brothers, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship and are former kickboxers, were apprehended in Miami in late July following a extradition request from the United Kingdom.
Having established their base in Romania since 2017, the Tates have been the subject of a criminal inquiry in the country since December 2022, primarily focusing on human trafficking allegations. Despite the accusations, the brothers have consistently denied any wrongdoing. According to Romanian prosecutors, the Tates lured their victims by feigning romantic interest or marriage and then coerced them into creating explicit content for a webcam enterprise.
In response to the indictment, the Tates’ Romanian lawyer, Eugen Vidineac, stated that they would scrutinize every detail rigorously and challenge any shortcomings in evidence or legal procedures through appropriate legal channels. The accused individuals maintain their innocence in the face of these allegations.
Currently detained in the U.S., the Tate brothers await a decision on their potential extradition to the UK, where they are wanted on charges related to rape. The Romanian anti-organized crime prosecuting unit, DIICOT, which is leading the investigation against the Tates, has not confirmed whether they will seek extradition from the U.S. The legal proceedings in Romania may allow for a trial in absentia, but the actual trial commencement will be subject to review by a preliminary court chamber judge to ensure legal compliance.
While the law mandates a 60-day period for the preliminary chamber judge to finalize the case report, the process often extends beyond this timeframe. The Tates have the option to contest the charges against them and navigate the legal proceedings as they progress. The brothers’ purported exploitation of a victim, financial gains from illicit activities, and attempts to launder money through luxury car purchases have been detailed by prosecutors.
In a previous legal development, the Tate brothers faced charges of human trafficking in Romania, but the case was returned to prosecutors in late 2024 by the Bucharest court of appeals due to the exclusion of certain evidence. Andrew Tate, who has openly expressed misogynistic views, indicated his relocation to Romania was influenced by perceived leniency in law enforcement there.
The Tates have cultivated a significant following, particularly among young men, by projecting an extravagant, hyper-masculine image centered around fast cars and relationships with attractive women.
