More than 170 soldiers have been mobilized to assist in the evacuation of a popular vacation destination following a wildfire that swept through two villages in the southeast of Spain, creating a 65-foot wall of flames.
Nearly 200 individuals have been forced to evacuate as a result of the forest fire that ravaged the villages in Murcia, which are situated near Benidorm and Alicante, close to the southern Costa Blanca.
Yesterday evening, approximately 170 soldiers from the specialized UME unit of the Army were called upon to support the efforts of firefighters and other emergency personnel combating the fire both on the ground and from the air.
Concerned hikers on the nearby Cresta Del Gallo mountain ridge raised the alarm at 3 pm yesterday upon noticing fires breaking out in a nearby national park.
The fire rapidly spread across the Murcia region, prompting over 200 distressed residents to contact emergency services for assistance.
Videos captured at the scene depict frightened tourists and locals fleeing from the towering inferno, which grew increasingly fierce as it devoured everything in its path.
More than 300 firefighters, emergency responders, and soldiers were dispatched to contain the blaze, with aircraft dropping water from above to douse the flames.
As of now, the fire has consumed over 270 hectares of land and one individual has been treated for burns.
In a startling revelation, emergency services suggested that the fire may have been deliberately ignited by an arsonist, stating that initial investigations point to intentional ignition.
Murcia’s mayor, Rebeca Perez, acknowledged the tireless efforts of emergency services throughout the night to combat the fire continuously.

A local resident, who voluntarily evacuated before mandatory orders were issued, described the ominous atmosphere, noting the smoke and ongoing blaze visible from their location.
Another resident emphasized the close proximity of the fire to residential areas, illustrating the intensity of the flames that threatened the narrow streets.
The region’s recent heavy rainfall had left the area lush and unattended, contributing to the rapid and intense burning of the undergrowth.
Emergency services confirmed on Wednesday morning that the forest fire has been extinguished, with only hot spots remaining, posing no immediate danger.
