A man tragically took his mother’s life following the news of his father’s passing. Simon Carter, who had been estranged from his mother, Gwyneth Carter, for nearly two decades, unexpectedly visited her residence in Macclesfield on July 12, 2025, seeking information about his father’s fate.
Upon learning from Gwyneth that his father had died two years earlier, Simon made a brief visit of 10-15 minutes before departing. Concerned about Simon’s behavior, Gwyneth confided in her sister, Janis, expressing uncertainty about his potential substance use and noting that he was not behaving like her son.
After unsuccessful attempts to reach Gwyneth, Janis sought help from a neighbor on July 18. Tragically, Gwyneth was discovered deceased at her home, having sustained severe head and neck injuries.
Simon faced sentencing at Chester Crown Court, where he received an indeterminate section 37 hospital order with a section 41 restriction under the Mental Health Act 1983. He has been in custody under the Mental Health Act since his apprehension on July 20, 2025, according to Manchester Evening News.
Living in Torquay at the time, Simon was arrested due to compelling forensic evidence linking him to the crime scene through his DNA and footwear. A plea of manslaughter by diminished responsibility was accepted based on significant medical evidence revealing his undisclosed mental health struggles.
Following Gwyneth’s untimely demise, her family paid tribute to her, describing the 72-year-old as a resilient individual with an unforgettable laughter. They remembered her as a competitive darts player known for her unwavering loyalty and love for her dog, Oscar.
DI Simon Mills highlighted the extensive investigation, which included the recovery of over 4,000 hours of CCTV footage. The evidence pointed to Simon’s presence at the scene through DNA and footwear analysis, indicating erratic behavior possibly linked to undiagnosed mental health issues.
