The songwriter of Liam Payne’s track “Live Forever” has revealed that the song was inspired by a hotel balcony fall. Samuel Preston, the frontman of The Ordinary Boys, shared that the song stemmed from his own near-death experience in 2017 when he fell from a second-floor hotel balcony in Denmark after heavy drinking. He later passed the song to Liam, who released it in 2019, well before the tragic incident where the One Direction singer fell from a hotel balcony in Argentina in 2024. Preston expressed astonishment at the eerie parallels between Liam’s demise and the song’s origin.

In a recent interview, Preston described Liam as a “funny, kind-hearted guy with great talent” but felt helpless in offering more support. Reflecting on the lyrics, Preston wished he could have provided a warning through the song, emphasizing the challenge of advising someone who may not be receptive.

Preston himself suffered severe injuries from his fall, including multiple fractures and a punctured lung, with doubts initially cast on his ability to walk again. Despite a challenging recovery period involving surgeries and wheelchair confinement, he eventually overcame the physical setbacks.

Subsequently, Preston faced a battle with painkiller addiction stemming from post-fall treatments. He recounted this dark period as filled with dread but emerged victorious after a strenuous recovery process.

At the time of his passing, Liam was in a relationship with Kate Cassidy following a tumultuous engagement with Maya, an influencer turned author, from 2018 to 2022. Maya later detailed their relationship in a fictionalized account in her book, “Looking Forward,” and raised concerns about Liam’s behavior in a TikTok post before his demise. In a revealing interview post his death, Maya disclosed Liam’s struggles with identity issues and drug use, expressing understanding rather than blame for his challenges.

Maya emphasized that Liam’s internal conflicts, particularly his struggles with addiction and betrayal, were the main reasons for their relationship’s breakdown. Despite the hardships, she acknowledged his personal battles and the realization that their relationship was not what she perceived it to be.
