“Spain Bars US Military Aircraft Amid Iran Conflict”

Published on

A prominent European nation has decided to bar US military aircraft involved in the ongoing conflict with Iran from using its airspace. Reports indicate that American planes engaged in the Middle East operations will not have permission to land at Spanish bases or traverse Spanish airspace. This move has reportedly irked US President Donald Trump due to the stance taken by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who has not been supportive of the war efforts.

Spain has refrained from granting access to fighter jets and other US military aircraft at the Rota (Cádiz) and Morón de la Frontera (Seville) airbases since the conflict began. Prime Minister Sanchez has consistently been critical of Trump and his policies, with the recent dispute escalating when Spain’s foreign minister contradicted a statement by the White House press secretary regarding Spain’s cooperation with the US military. Despite condemning the oppressive regime in Tehran, Sánchez affirmed his opposition to what he deemed an unjustified military offensive.

Expressing refusal to be complicit in actions contrary to global interests and values out of fear of reprisals, Sánchez has maintained a firm stance against the war, advocating for peace with the slogan “No to the war.” The relationship between Madrid and Washington, traditionally stable and amicable, has faced strains over differing views on military cooperation and international relations.

In a historical context, the US and Spain have shared military bases since the 20th century, initially established during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Sánchez, a prominent left-leaning leader in Europe, has championed progressive ideals including feminism, human rights, climate change awareness, and a rules-based international order, aligning with principles that contrast with the ideologies of Trump and far-right politicians across Europe.

Within NATO, Spain stood out as the sole member declining to commit to increasing military expenditure to 5% of GDP. Despite pressure, Sánchez successfully negotiated a lower spending threshold of 2.1% during a NATO meeting, which he deemed both adequate and realistic. Trump’s response included hinting at the possibility of Spain’s expulsion from the military alliance, though such actions have not materialized thus far.
