“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Breaks Box Office Record

Sony Pictures announced that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” shattered the North American opening weekend record previously held by “Avengers: Endgame,” raking in $360 million in ticket sales from theaters across the U.S. and Canada. Initially projected to earn $355 million in its debut weekend across 4,487 theaters, the fourth installment featuring Tom Holland outperformed expectations, surpassing the $357 million set by “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.” Prior to “Avengers: Endgame,” no film had crossed the $300 million mark in domestic opening weekend sales, with the previous top earners being “Avengers: Infinity War” at $257 million in 2018 and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $247 million in 2015. Additionally, amidst the pandemic in December 2021, the third Spider-Man film starring Holland, titled “No Way Home,” made its mark with a $260 million opening in the U.S. on its way to a global total of $1.9 billion.

The successful combination of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” featuring common cast members Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, contributed to a record-setting weekend for movie theaters in the U.S. and Canada. The overall domestic box office has seen a significant increase of over 15% compared to the previous year, totaling more than $6.2 billion in ticket sales, according to box-office analytics company Rentrak.
