“Starmer Considers Resignation Honors Reversal”

Published on

Keir Starmer hints at potentially going back on his promise to avoid granting resignation honors as he prepares to leave office. The Prime Minister refrained from completely ruling out the possibility of compiling a list of honors upon his departure from Downing Street later this month. In 2023, during his time as the opposition leader, Starmer criticized Rishi Sunak for allowing Boris Johnson to distribute honors to his associates, calling it difficult to justify.

Although Starmer previously stated that he would not award resignation honors, he now appears open to the idea, implying that he may nominate allies for such recognition. Typically, Prime Ministers have the privilege of recommending individuals for honors post their tenure, subject to approval by their successor and the House of Lords Appointments Commission. Notably, Liz Truss disclosed a list of nominations despite her brief time in office, while Boris Johnson named several aides involved in the Partygate controversy.

Starmer’s remarks came during his final significant international summit as Prime Minister. He is anticipated to officially step down on July 20, with Andy Burnham likely to assume the leadership. Reflecting on his resignation forced by MPs last month, Starmer expressed his commitment to ensuring a successful future for the Labour government and the country. He praised Burnham’s capabilities, affirming his belief in Burnham’s suitability for the role of Prime Minister based on their longstanding collaboration.

When asked if Burnham would outperform him as PM, Starmer humorously deferred judgment to others. Despite the challenges, Starmer believed he had left the nation in a better state than when he took office. Acknowledging the privilege of serving as the UK Prime Minister, he emphasized the profound honor and responsibility it entailed.
