“Storm Chandra Hits UK: Prepare Flood Kit, Severe Weather Alerts”

Published on

Britons are advised to prepare seven essential items as Storm Chandra makes landfall in the UK, prompting amber and yellow weather alerts. An amber rain warning has been issued for seven regions in southwest England, anticipating heavy rain, potential flooding, and disruptions until 9 am tomorrow. The Met Office has cautioned about possible floods damaging properties and posing risks to life, along with expected transportation delays.

Residents in vulnerable areas are recommended by the Met Office to assemble a flood kit consisting of crucial items to mitigate potential losses. Hazardous driving conditions, power outages, and isolated communities due to flooding are anticipated. Landslides are also a concern in certain areas expecting substantial rainfall. The affected regions under the amber alert include Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Plymouth, Somerset, and Torbay.

Additionally, a yellow rain warning is in effect for specific areas until 10 am tomorrow. Northern Ireland is under a separate warning impacting counties Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, and Tyrone. Tomorrow’s forecast remains grim as more weather warnings, particularly amber alerts, have been issued for southwest England and the eastern coast of Northern Ireland due to anticipated rain and wind challenges.

Strong winds are projected to impact eastern Northern Ireland, with gusts reaching 60-70mph and potentially up to 75mph in coastal regions. Uncommon easterly winds of such intensity are expected to have significant impacts. Apart from the southwest, where Storm Ingrid caused destruction recently, other regions like northern England and Scotland are also expected to experience downpours with less severe weather warnings. Snow warnings have been issued for Scotland and northern England, predicting accumulations of 2-5cm widely and up to 10-20cm at higher altitudes.

As of Monday at 1 pm, the Environment Agency reports 21 flood warnings and 124 flood alerts across England. The South West is mainly under flood warnings, with a couple issued around York. Chief forecaster Paul Gundersen emphasizes the need for staying informed about weather forecasts and local warnings to address the complex weather conditions efficiently.
