An uncommon red alert has been declared due to a ‘weather bomb’ causing chaos in the UK as heavy snowfall disrupts travel. Storm Goretti is sweeping through the nation, leading to flight cancellations at two airports and the accumulation of up to 30cm of snow.

London Heathrow and Birmingham airports are experiencing flight disruptions due to the inclement weather conditions. The Met Office has issued various warnings for snow, wind, rain, and ice across the UK, including a red alert for strong winds in the southwest of England and an amber alert for heavy snow in central regions.

Severe travel disruptions are occurring on roads with snow-covered trees falling and road closures. Additionally, power outages have been reported. Met Office’s chief forecaster Neil Armstrong described Storm Goretti as a “multi-hazard event,” emphasizing significant snow impacts in Wales and the Midlands, and very strong winds in the southwest.

Approximately 65,000 homes in England and Wales are currently without power, according to the National Grid, with a large number of outages concentrated in southwest England. The Met Office warned of “violent gusts” affecting Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, with record-breaking wind speeds of 99mph reported at St Mary’s Airport.

The storm’s impact can be seen in a video capturing the forceful winds at Hayle train station in Cornwall. Schools have preemptively closed as winds up to 100mph are predicted in certain areas.

National Highways have reopened lanes on the M1 northbound after a collision involving a lorry, but caution is advised due to ongoing weather conditions. The Met Office has issued a yellow snow and ice warning for various regions in the UK for Sunday, with snow expected to settle in these areas.

Storm Garetti has turned the sky purple in parts of the UK, with Birmingham experiencing an unusual hue. Schools remain closed, and travel disruptions are expected to continue as the storm progresses.
