Two individuals, Leighton Ashby, 22, and Oakley Hollands, 20, received prison sentences for their cruel act of fatally beating a young sheep and detonating it using explosives. The shocking incident took place at Hove Crown Court, resulting in Ashby being sentenced to two years in prison and Hollands to 20 months in a young offenders’ institution.

The pair, who were students at Plumpton Agricultural College, engaged in the heinous act while under the influence of alcohol at Ditchling Beacon in November 2023. They targeted a Romsey ewe, subjecting it to brutal abuse for their twisted pleasure. The prosecutor detailed how Ashby physically assaulted the sheep, while Hollands goaded him on, laughing throughout the barbaric attack.

The violent assault lasted approximately 30 minutes, during which the defenseless animal suffered immensely. The culmination of the cruelty was the insertion of fireworks into the lamb’s body, causing further agony. Additional evidence revealed a disturbing trend of animal mutilation in videos found on Hollands’ device.

Outraged protesters gathered outside the Hove Trial Centre during the sentencing of Ashby and Hollands. The judge condemned their actions, emphasizing the extreme suffering inflicted on the innocent creature and highlighting the inexplicable cruelty of individuals with farming backgrounds.

Both Ashby and Hollands, residents of Kent, admitted guilt to causing unnecessary harm to a protected animal and were subsequently banned from owning animals for a decade. Sussex Police expressed satisfaction with the legal outcome, emphasizing the importance of holding offenders accountable and safeguarding rural communities.

During court proceedings, statements of shock and disgust from the community were read aloud. While acknowledging the seriousness of the crimes committed, the defendants’ legal representatives cited factors such as immaturity, age, and undisclosed medical conditions as contributing to their actions.
