“Studio Reset: Industry Veterans Launch Supernatural Mystery Game”

Published on

A new independent game development studio, Studio Reset, has emerged in Edmonton, founded by three industry veterans who previously collaborated at prominent gaming companies like Bioware, known for iconic titles such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Kaelin Lavallee, the creative director, departed Bioware in 2015 and, after working with various game firms, teamed up with Kris Schoneberg and Francis Lacuna to establish Studio Reset earlier this year.

This trend of experienced developers breaking away to create independent games is evident across Canada, with studios like Soft Rains and Peculiar Path, composed of former Ubisoft, Bethesda, and other major studio employees, venturing into the indie scene. While launching independent ventures in the competitive gaming sector poses risks due to the vast number of annual releases, it allows developers to explore their creativity, especially as larger studios prioritize safe bets over innovative projects.

Studio Reset’s inaugural game, “The Eventide,” is a supernatural mystery set in a “neon-noir” Canadian backdrop, inspired by shows like “The X-Files” and narrative-driven puzzle games. Players will select investigators from a diverse cast to solve enigmatic cases, each offering unique perspectives akin to Mulder and Scully from “The X-Files,” challenging players to unravel the truth.

The Entertainment Software Association of Canada emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between AAA and indie studios, with smaller studios bringing fresh ideas while larger ones offer resources and expertise. Industry veterans like Philippe Morin, who transitioned from Ubisoft to found Red Barrels, highlight the allure of indie development for hands-on creative involvement, as seen in the success of games like “Outlast.”

As the gaming industry undergoes transformations and faces uncertainties, independent studios like Studio Reset aim to carve their niche and sustain themselves by appealing to dedicated audiences. Despite the challenges, these indie developers remain committed to producing unique, engaging games and contributing to the industry’s diversity and resilience.
