“Study Reveals Work-Related Stress Impairs Sleep in Over-50s”

Published on

A recent study suggests that individuals over the age of 50 are facing significant challenges with work-related stress disrupting their sleep patterns. The research conducted by Edinburgh University over a year on older employees revealed that consistent sleep disturbances, rather than the duration of sleep, are leading to feelings of being poorly rested. These sleep quality issues were found to be associated with workplace stress, impacting overall well-being.

The study monitored 45 workers aged 50 to 66 across various professions who wore wearable sensors and completed regular well-being and workplace evaluations. Surprisingly, nearly 70% of the participants reported persistent and clinically significant sleep problems, despite not having a history of diagnosed sleep disorders. Even though they were getting an average of 6.5 to 8 hours of sleep per night, the quality of their sleep was compromised.

Lead researcher Athanasios Tsanas, a professor of data science, expressed astonishment at the extent of sleep issues identified in this group with no prior clinical diagnosis. The findings highlighted the strong correlation between work-related stress and sleep disturbances, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance for overall well-being.

While the focus has traditionally been on achieving the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night, the study emphasized the significance of undisturbed deep sleep for physical and mental health benefits. Despite most participants over 50 meeting the sleep duration requirements, wearable sensor data collected over 5,200 days revealed frequent disruptions in their sleep patterns, with 92% meeting the clinical threshold for a sleep disorder at least once during the study.

The analysis, utilizing artificial intelligence, identified workplace experiences as a critical factor contributing to sleep disruptions. Co-author Dr. Belinda Steffan highlighted the unexpected challenges faced by the study population in managing their sleep, emphasizing the impact of work-related stress alongside age-related factors on sleep quality.

The study underscored the importance of addressing work-related sleep issues, particularly for individuals over 50, as the aging population in the UK continues to grow. By 2050, a significant percentage of the population will be over 65, emphasizing the need to focus on sleep quality, workplace well-being, and work-life balance to support the health and productivity of older workers.

In conclusion, the researchers emphasized the need for organizations and policymakers to prioritize sleep quality and well-being in the workplace, offering actionable strategies to enhance the health and longevity of individuals approaching retirement.
