Suggs of Madness Reveals Bowie’s Offstage Charm

Published on

At the peak of his career with Madness, lead singer Suggs shared stages and social scenes with the iconic David Bowie, revealing a different side to the legendary performer offstage. Born Graham McPherson, the ska-pop artist recalls touring with Bowie in the 1980s and describes him as “quite charming” in private settings.

According to Suggs, Bowie maintained a low profile, often visiting a Soho club called the White Club discreetly and enjoying moments of anonymity away from the public eye. Reflecting on their interactions, Suggs emphasized Bowie’s preference for limited security, believing that excessive protection could hinder one’s experience at his level of success.

Known by his nickname derived from a childhood incident, Suggs is gearing up to reunite with Madness for a performance at the Lakeside Festival in August at Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire. Nearly five decades since their debut album release, the band continues to entertain audiences with a more refined stage presence compared to their earlier, rowdier shows.

Recalling a memorable mishap during a concert supporting Bowie, Suggs humorously recounts a stage incident that left him falling off a platform, with Bowie checking on him from the sidelines. Despite such mishaps, Suggs remains enthusiastic about their upcoming performances, though his signature high-energy dance moves have been somewhat restrained following a recent double-knee replacement surgery.

Expressing gratitude for modern medical advancements, Suggs acknowledges the pain of recovery but looks forward to returning to the stage with renewed vigor. As the band’s legacy continues to attract fans across generations, Suggs appreciates the enduring appeal of Madness and the bond of friendship that has sustained the band through decades of music-making.

At 65, Suggs reflects on the importance of family, highlighting his role as a grandfather and the joy of connecting with his grandchildren. Despite the band’s success, Suggs values the camaraderie among bandmates, emphasizing that friendship has been the cornerstone of their enduring musical journey. With a mix of fond memories and humorous anecdotes, Suggs looks ahead to the Lakeside Festival performance, eager to share the stage once again with his bandmates and entertain fans old and new.
