Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh narrowly missed out on the gold medal by just 0.02 seconds in the women’s 200-meter individual medley at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. The Toronto native, who is the reigning Olympic and world champion, settled for silver behind China’s Yu Yiting, who set a championship record with a time of 2:07.45. American Alex Walsh secured the bronze with a time of 2:07.66.

Yu started strong on the butterfly leg, almost breaking the world record pace, but American Regan Smith took the lead on the backstroke. Yu regained the lead on the breaststroke and managed to hold off McIntosh in the closing stages.

This marks McIntosh’s third individual medal at the championships, having already won gold in the 400m medley and silver in the 200m freestyle. She also contributed to Canada’s bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

Reflecting on her performance, McIntosh expressed that despite this being one of her better swims, the overall meet didn’t go as planned. The 19-year-old, who holds the world record in the event, mentioned she aims to learn and improve as she transitions into her 20s.

In another event, Canadian Alexanne Lepage clinched the gold in the women’s 200m breaststroke, surpassing the reigning Olympic and world champion Kate Douglass of the United States. Lepage led the race from start to finish, setting a personal best time of 2:21.73. Douglass finished second in 2:22.57, while South Africa’s Kaylene Corbett secured third place in 2:22.97.

Canada wrapped up the championships with a total of 13 medals (three gold, four silver, six bronze), marking their most successful performance since 1997. The United States topped the medal standings with 50 medals, followed by Australia with 35 and Canada in third place.

The championships also saw notable performances from other Canadian swimmers, including Taylor Ruck setting a new Canadian record in the women’s 50m freestyle and Lani Pallister of Australia defeating Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle. Sam Short of Australia and Jamie Jack also secured victories in their respective events, showcasing exceptional performances at the championships.
