Britons heading for summer vacations may encounter dangerous mosquito-transmitted diseases that have spread across popular European tourist destinations. The mosquito season is currently at its peak in Europe, with soaring temperatures providing an ideal environment for the proliferation of harmful viruses such as dengue fever and chikungunya, which can lead to severe consequences including paralysis, vision impairment, joint pain, and even death.
Mosquitoes transmit these viruses by first biting infected animals and then passing on the disease to humans through subsequent bites. Notably, there have been around 1,000 suspected cases of these diseases in major British holiday spots like Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and Greece.
In Italy, 38 individuals have succumbed to West Nile virus infections as reported by MailOnline. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has documented the resurgence of West Nile virus cases, particularly in Florence and Verona. Additionally, Romania and North Macedonia have confirmed three infections collectively. The West Nile virus, initially discovered in Uganda’s West Nile district in 1937, has since spread to Europe.
While most individuals infected with the virus remain asymptomatic or experience mild illness, approximately one out of 150 people may develop severe complications such as life-threatening meningitis and encephalitis, which can cause inflammation in the brain and surrounding spinal cord tissues.
Less common but equally concerning, Dengue fever has been reported with 19 suspected cases in France, along with four cases in Italy and two in Portugal. Symptoms typically include flu-like manifestations such as high fever, headaches, swollen glands, rashes, and joint pain, but in severe instances, individuals may experience bleeding in vomit or stool. The World Health Organization estimates that there are between 100 million to 400 million dengue infections worldwide annually.
Experts have raised concerns over disease-carrying mosquitoes, attributing the heightened risks to escalating temperatures fueled by climate change. Professor Rachel Lowe from the global health resilience group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center in Spain emphasized the impact of global warming on disease vectors like malaria and dengue, highlighting the expanding geographic reach of these diseases due to changing climate patterns.
As temperatures rise, the extended hot seasons create favorable conditions for the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, leading to more frequent and complex outbreaks. This shift poses a challenge for public health systems and underscores the importance of preparedness and vigilance in combating the escalating threat posed by these diseases.
