Instances of great white shark attacks remain highly uncommon, which is fortunate.

Similar to many other types of sharks, great white sharks typically steer clear of humans due to their intelligence in distinguishing them from prey. This behavior could also be due to their understanding that such encounters often result in negative consequences.

Although the exact species responsible for the attack on surfer Brad Smith is uncertain, all indications suggest that it was a great white shark.

Smith, aged 29, was surfing with friends at Left Handers Beach near Gracetown, a town located 250km from Perth, in Australia. Witnesses reported a sudden and intense disturbance around Smith, followed by the emergence of a massive shark described as being “the size of a car,” which crashed into his surfboard, breaking it in half.

Despite Smith’s brief struggle against the shark, onlookers observed another shark circling the area, leading to a grim situation as recounted by witnesses.

One witness remarked, “It was almost as if they had ambushed him.”

Various eyewitnesses emphasized the extraordinary size of the sharks involved in the incident.

According to 17-year-old surfer Cameron Rowe, “When the first one came up a bit I could see its fin and it was almost a yard high. When it came out of the water with Brad still fighting it, I could see its body was about the width of a car and its open jaws were as wide as a man’s arm.”

Witnesses described Smith attempting to fend off the sharks with desperate punches as the predators repeatedly attacked him.

His friends courageously paddled out to retrieve him and brought him back to shore, where an anaesthetist, who happened to be surfing nearby, examined him and determined his injuries were fatal, resulting in a swift passing.

Authorities later found Smith’s surfboard with clear bite marks from the sharks’ sharp teeth.

Despite search efforts by fisheries officers via boat and helicopter, the sharks responsible for the attack were never located.
