More than 700 individuals have lined up for over a half-mile stretch to receive the meningitis vaccine at the sports center of the University of Kent in Canterbury. The uptick in confirmed cases to 29 prompted this surge in demand. Additional vaccination sites were set up today in Faversham, approximately 10 miles away, and at the Vicarage Lane Clinic in Ashford. The overwhelming response follows a previous incident where students were turned away due to the high demand for the vaccine.
The University of Kent had to halt its vaccination service on the Canterbury campus due to capacity constraints, shortly after confirming 27 suspected cases. Approximately 100 individuals were prevented from joining the queue around 3 pm. The urgency for the vaccine heightened after the tragic deaths of two young individuals during the outbreak: 18-year-old Juliette Kenny, a student, and a 21-year-old student from the University of Kent.
Juliette’s father, Michael, revealed that she passed away within 12 hours of showing initial symptoms of vomiting and cheek discoloration. Michael emphasized the profound impact of Juliette’s loss and advocated for enhanced access to the menB vaccination for teenagers and young people, in collaboration with the Meningitis Research Foundation.
The call for action to prevent further tragedies was underscored by Michael, urging immediate measures to safeguard families from the effects of meningitis B. Health officials confirmed 29 cases, with a majority being meningococcal group B (MenB) cases. Concerns were raised when it was discovered that an infected individual may have revisited a nightclub at the center of the outbreak, potentially exposing others.
Over the first two days of vaccine distribution, 1,600 individuals received vaccinations, and 8,559 antibiotics were dispensed by healthcare providers. The government announced the release of 20,000 vaccines from NHS supplies to be available at pharmacies. Health Secretary Wes Streeting visited the vaccination center to express support for the swift response and expansion of vaccine availability.
Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield reassured the public that the city remains operational despite the situation. Emphasizing the importance of following preventive measures, she encouraged people to continue their activities with caution. The community is urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate risks associated with the outbreak.
