A woman initially mistook a cold for a serious infection that led to the amputation of her leg. Friedel de Beer, a 51-year-old former swim school owner residing in the French Alps, fell ill with what she thought was a cold in February 2023. Shortly after, she collapsed and noticed red, blistered skin on her ankle.

Rushed to the hospital by her husband, James Hope-Lang, doctors diagnosed Friedel with Strep A, which had progressed to necrotising fasciitis, commonly known as the ‘flesh-eating disease.’ Despite efforts to remove infected tissue, she eventually underwent below-the-knee and above-the-knee amputations due to persistent infection.

Following these surgeries, Friedel adapted to walking with a prosthetic and underwent further adjustments in 2025 to enhance its functionality. Embracing her new reality, she now engages in activities like swimming, kayaking, and walking with her prosthetic alongside her 11-year-old son, JJ, acknowledging the transformative impact of her experience.

Reflecting on her journey, Friedel emphasized the importance of seizing life’s opportunities and coping with challenges. She expressed gratitude for survival, acknowledging the shift in perspective brought about by the ordeal. Friedel’s resilience and determination to make the most of every moment serve as an inspiration to those around her.

Despite the physical and emotional hurdles she faced, Friedel remains optimistic and proactive in her recovery journey. Her story highlights the power of perseverance and the ability to find joy and purpose even in the face of adversity.
