Police in Wellington have initiated an inquiry following a woman’s report of a violent assault involving physical assault and rape. A man, aged in his 20s, was apprehended approximately 150 miles away in Sussex on suspicion of rape and is currently in police custody. The victim recounted being attacked and sexually assaulted by the man around 2:20 am in the North Street vicinity before fleeing in a vehicle.
The woman received medical care at a hospital and was later released, with support services offered to her. The suspect was detained overnight, and his car was impounded. Detective Inspector Wendy Fellowes, part of Avon and Somerset Police’s Operation Bluestone specialized unit for investigating rape and serious sexual offenses, confirmed the arrest.
