“Tara Baker’s Cold Case Solved After 23 Years”

Published on

While studying late at the law library in Athens, Georgia, Tara Louise Baker took a moment to call a friend to ensure their safe arrival home. Known for her compassion and desire for justice, Tara was pursuing a career in law, driven by her innate concern for others. At 23, Tara was already an accomplished individual, holding two bachelor’s degrees in political science and paralegal studies. Currently in her first year of law studies at the University of Georgia, she was gaining practical experience at a local law firm.

As the oldest of four siblings, Tara was naturally protective of those around her. Living with two roommates off-campus and in a relationship with Chris Melton, whom she met in college, Tara made a habit of checking on friends, even when walking home alone at night. However, on January 18, 2001, after informing a friend of her departure at 10 p.m., Tara mysteriously vanished. The next morning, a fire was reported at her apartment, leading to the tragic discovery of her lifeless body.

Investigations revealed that Tara had been brutally murdered, with evidence of knife wounds, blunt force trauma, strangulation, and sexual assault. The perpetrator had attempted to cover their tracks by setting the apartment on fire, resulting in significant damage that hindered the investigation. Despite extensive efforts, including questioning Tara’s boyfriend, the case remained unsolved, haunting the community and the university.

Over two decades later, a breakthrough occurred in 2023 with the passing of the Coleman-Baker Act in Georgia. Named after Tara and another cold case victim, Rhonda Sue Coleman, the act established a dedicated unit within the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to re-examine cases using advanced DNA technology. This initiative led to the identification and arrest of Edrick Lamont Faust in connection with Tara’s murder in May 2024.

During Faust’s trial, the prosecution detailed the heinous crimes committed against Tara, while the defense raised doubts about the evidence and alternative suspects. However, after a two-week trial, Faust was found guilty on all charges. Tara’s family expressed their deep sorrow and relief at the verdict, emphasizing the importance of justice for Tara’s memory and the closure it brought to her loved ones.

With the sentencing of two life terms plus an additional 45 years, Tara’s legacy lives on through the justice served in her name. The resolution of her case serves as a beacon of hope for other families seeking closure for their lost loved ones.
