A court was informed that a high school teacher, facing accusations of killing a 13-month-old infant he was in the process of adopting, harbored negative feelings towards the child. The baby, Preston Davey, initially in good health, was placed with Jamie Varley, 37, and John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, in Blackpool in April 2023. Tragically, less than four months later, in July, Preston passed away at Blackpool Victoria Hospital due to airway obstruction, believed to be caused by smothering or object insertion.
During the trial at Preston Crown Court, it was revealed that Preston suffered severe mistreatment, including sexual abuse and physical harm, resulting in 40 traumatic injuries. Varley denies the murder charge and 25 other related offenses, while McGowan-Fazakerley pleaded not guilty to charges linked to the child’s death and other offenses.
Evidence presented in court indicated Varley had expressed concerns about Preston’s well-being to a colleague, confessing to harmful thoughts of drowning or suffocating the child. Despite disclosing these thoughts to various parties involved in the adoption process, Varley did not act on them until Preston’s tragic death.
Moreover, the court learned about multiple instances where Preston had been admitted to the hospital for various health issues, including a fractured elbow. Suspicious marks were noted on his body during medical visits, with Varley attributing them to the child bruising easily. The prosecution argued that Varley failed to seek timely medical help when signs of distress were evident, showing a lack of concern for Preston’s welfare.
The court proceedings also highlighted discrepancies in Varley’s account of events leading to Preston’s collapse and subsequent death. Pathologist Dr. Alison Armour’s findings revealed injuries consistent with non-accidental harm shortly before the child’s passing.
The trial is ongoing as further details emerge surrounding the tragic circumstances of Preston’s death.
