Wes Streeting has drawn parallels between technology companies and the tobacco industry as more voices call for a ban on social media for individuals under 16 years old.
The former Health Secretary implied that social media could be as detrimental as smoking for young people, accusing tech firms of emulating tobacco companies in evading regulation.
The government’s online safety consultation, ending today, is exploring measures such as an Australia-style prohibition on social media for under-16s, restrictions on app usage hours, and controls on addictive functionalities.
Streeting’s remarks come following his resignation and announcement to contest any leadership election to succeed Keir Starmer. Despite the Prime Minister’s refusal to step down, Streeting has begun positioning himself in Labour’s shadow leadership race while rival Andy Burnham competes in the Makerfield by-election.
He emphasized, “Social media needs to be treated like tobacco – highly addictive, detrimental to health, and Big Tech is adopting Big Tobacco’s strategies to evade oversight.”
His statement aligns with concerns raised in a report by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, which equates social media and smartphone use with smoking and seatbelt use in cars as significant health concerns. The report warns of a surge in radicalized children due to exposure to distressing online content.
The Labour Party chair urged the government to act decisively, emphasizing the importance of the ongoing consultation in safeguarding children’s future.
Families impacted by online-related tragedies are scheduled to meet with Keir Starmer to push for the implementation of social media restrictions for under-16s. Campaigner Lauren Cowell appealed to the Prime Minister through the Mirror on behalf of these families, urging action to prevent further harm.
Calls have been made for the UK to mirror Australia’s approach to social media restrictions, although concerns persist about its effectiveness. The government is expected to unveil its plans post-consultation, having already secured legal authority to swiftly amend laws if necessary.
