Teen on Drugs Flees After Fatal Bike Crash

Published on

Video footage captured the moment a teenager on an electric bike, under the influence of drugs, fled the scene after fatally striking an elderly woman on a pedestrian crossing.

The teenager, identified as Billy Stokoe, 19, was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison for causing the death of 86-year-old Gloria Stephenson. The incident occurred in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, on May 16 last year. Stokoe was riding at high speed, intoxicated with cannabis, and distracted by his mobile phone, which led to the collision that killed Ms. Stephenson instantly.

Surveillance cameras recorded Stokoe hitting Ms. Stephenson and being thrown from his illegal high-powered electric bike. He was observed removing his face covering, briefly checking on the victim, then fleeing the scene.

After his mother brought him to a local police station, Stokoe was arrested. His first question to the authorities was about the condition of Ms. Stephenson.

At Newcastle Crown Court, Stokoe pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a license, and driving an uninsured vehicle. He will serve at least half of his sentence before being eligible for release and will face a five-year driving ban upon release.

Ms. Stephenson’s family mourned the loss of a vibrant and independent great-grandmother who had a passion for life. Described as physically active and about to embark on a vacation in Lanzarote, Ms. Stephenson tragically died while walking her daughter’s dog to meet her daily step goal.

Stokoe’s lack of remorse deeply upset Ms. Stephenson’s family, who criticized the delays in his guilty plea and his apparent disregard for the consequences of his actions. They emphasized the need for stricter regulations regarding the use of high-powered bikes on public roads.

According to Superintendent Billy Mulligan of Northumbria Police, Stokoe was recklessly riding his bike through Sunderland streets, exhibiting dangerous behavior before the collision. Mulligan highlighted the speeds at which these bikes can travel and the risks they pose to public safety.

Stokoe’s actions, captured on camera and witnessed by members of the public, showcased a callous disregard for the victim and the law. His decision to flee the scene and subsequent lack of genuine remorse have deeply affected Ms. Stephenson’s family and sparked calls for stricter enforcement against dangerous driving practices.
