A teenager who went missing for five days after disappearing while trekking a perilous trail has been located following an extensive search and rescue mission. Roberto Farias Tomaz was discovered safe on Monday after vanishing on Pico Parana, the highest peak in the south of Brazil, on January 1. The 19-year-old, who was hiking with a friend, started feeling unwell during the ascent, as reported by firefighters.

After reaching the summit and beginning their descent alongside another group on New Year’s Day at 6:30 am, Roberto became separated from his friend, prompting authorities to launch a search operation involving police and firefighters. Despite the challenging terrain, Roberto managed to cover a distance of 20km over five days, eventually reaching the Cacatu area of Antonina, where he sought help from a local farm.

In a social media video, Roberto described his physical condition, mentioning bruises, scrapes, and lost glasses but expressing relief at being found. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation, which revealed signs of mild dehydration and bruises on his lower limbs. Roberto’s family, residing in Pinhais near Curitiba, has been reunited with him and expressed gratitude for the support received during the search.

The successful rescue efforts were acknowledged by Governor of Parana, Ratinho Junior, who commended the collaboration of over 100 firefighters and around 300 volunteers involved in the operation. State Secretary of Public Security, Colonel Hudson Leoncio Teixeira, highlighted the intensive search efforts that led to Roberto’s safe discovery in Antonina.

Pico Parana, known for its challenging conditions and high accident risks, stands as the tallest peak in southern Brazil, with a trail spanning over 15km and typically requiring around 13 hours to complete.
