“Teen’s ‘Bomb’ Fitbit Triggers Flight Diversion”

Published on

A flight had to return to its origin after a 16-year-old’s Bluetooth device, named “Bomb” for their Fitbit watch, caused alarm among passengers. The United Airlines flight, en route from Newark, New Jersey, to Mallorca, Spain, departed around 6 pm on Saturday but landed back at approximately 9:30 pm on the same day.

The diversion occurred due to a perceived security threat, prompting authorities to investigate a suspicious item on board. Despite repeated instructions to switch off Bluetooth devices, two devices remained active.

Subsequently, emergency services identified the device named “Bomb” as a Fitbit belonging to a teenager on the flight. Air traffic control recordings disclosed that security personnel swiftly inspected the plane upon detecting a Bluetooth device labeled with a specific four-letter word.

United Airlines reported that the flight accommodated 190 passengers and 12 crew members, all of whom were evacuated to facilitate a thorough search by port authority police.

Following the screening by Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection officials, passengers reboarded the plane, which then resumed its journey to Mallorca. While the teen’s identity remains undisclosed, the FBI has initiated an inquiry into the incident.

United Airlines stated on Sunday that “United flight 236 from Newark to Palma De Mallorca, Spain safely returned to Newark to address a potential security concern. The flight continued on to Palma De Mallorca with a new crew.”

This incident follows another United Airlines flight from Chicago to Minneapolis, which diverted to Wisconsin due to a security issue involving a disruptive passenger. Law enforcement and the FBI intervened upon the flight’s arrival at Dane County Regional Airport, responding to reports of the passenger attempting to breach the cockpit.

According to air traffic control recordings, the unruly passenger was eventually restrained with the assistance of law enforcement officers, averting a potential breach of the cockpit.
