A 19-year-old young man tragically lost his life in Nottinghamshire after drowning in a lake while spending time with friends, with distressing video footage of the incident circulating widely on social media. Panashe Muchenje, a teenager from Nottingham, was at Balderton Lake near Newark on May 28, enjoying the hot weather with two companions when the unfortunate event occurred.
Witnesses captured the moment when Muchenje, a Zimbabwean national, entered the lake and encountered difficulties, leading to the dissemination of the shocking video online. The footage of his drowning has been extensively shared by Zimbabwean news outlets, prompting his family to appeal to major tech companies to remove the distressing content.
In response to the incident, The Mirror has launched the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign to address the alarming rate of child drownings in England. Muchenje’s family has requested that the public refrain from speculating on his death, as the police have confirmed that no foul play is suspected.
Reportedly, Muchenje was in the lake for approximately 22 minutes before being rescued and treated by paramedics on-site. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to the events of that day. Nottinghamshire County Councillor Johno Lee expressed shock and dismay over the online circulation of the tragic footage, emphasizing the need for social media platforms to remove such content promptly.
Nottinghamshire Police have indicated that no formal investigation is ongoing, and preparations are being made for a coroner’s report. The community has been urged to offer support to the grieving family and to avoid sharing the distressing videos online. Chief Inspector Clive Collings extended sympathies to Muchenje’s family and emphasized the importance of seeking support during this difficult time.
Moreover, it has been emphasized that open waters pose significant risks, especially during hot weather, and precautions should be taken to ensure safety. Maxwell Muchenje, the victim’s nephew, fondly remembered Muchenje as a vibrant and loving individual deeply involved in his church community.
The funeral for the young man is scheduled for June 9, as family and friends continue to mourn his untimely passing.
