“Teens sentenced to 4 years for rape after court review”

Published on

Two teenagers initially spared custody for committing rape have now been sentenced to four years in detention following a review by the Court of Appeal. The individuals, referred to as X and Y, were initially placed on a youth rehabilitation program after being found guilty of raping two girls in separate incidents in Fordingbridge, Hampshire.

Additionally, another 14-year-old, known as Z, was also given a youth rehabilitation order for his involvement in one of the assaults and an indecent images offense. The boys had shared videos of the attacks on social media platforms.

The decision to incarcerate the two older boys came after their cases were escalated to the Court of Appeal by Attorney General Lord Hermer under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme. During the sentencing, Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr, along with other judges, directly addressed the boys, emphasizing the severity of their actions and the impact on the victims.

Baroness Carr highlighted the egregious nature of the crimes, including the repeated rapes and the filming of the assaults, which exacerbated the trauma inflicted on the victims. The decision not to alter the sentence of the third boy was influenced by his younger age and lack of physical contact with the victims.

The Court criticized the initial sentencing judge for not fully considering the victims’ vulnerability and the psychological harm caused by the offenses. The severity of the crimes was emphasized, particularly due to the boys committing two separate assaults. The Attorney General’s representative argued for the boys’ detention during the appeal hearing.

The individuals, whose identities are protected by law, were found guilty of multiple rape and indecent image charges. Their legal representatives defended the initial sentences, stating that they were appropriate and carefully considered.

X and Y were both given youth rehabilitation orders, with X receiving intensive supervision for his offenses. Meanwhile, Z was handed a youth rehabilitation order for his involvement in the attacks. The appeal hearing raised concerns about the adequacy of the initial sentencing judge’s approach and the impact on the victims.

The victims, in their statements, expressed the profound impact of the assaults on their lives, highlighting the need for justice and accountability. The defense lawyers argued for rehabilitation and the prevention of future offenses by the offenders.

In conclusion, the Court of Appeal’s decision to impose detention on the two teenagers reflects the gravity of their actions and the necessity for accountability in cases of such serious offenses.
