A mother recently recounted the distressing moment she noticed concerning symptoms in her 14-year-old daughter, leading them to rush her to the hospital where the family received devastating news.
Maisie Almond, a diligent student who juggled multiple responsibilities including part-time jobs and regular gym visits, suddenly fell ill on September 15, 2024. Her parents, Kathryn and Stuart, initially thought it was a common bug when Maisie came home complaining of feeling unwell.
As Maisie’s condition worsened, with complaints of pain and a change in her appearance, her parents became increasingly alarmed. Her eyes took on a yellow hue, prompting them to seek urgent medical attention at the Accident and Emergency unit in Tameside.
Medical examinations revealed that Maisie’s stomach had also turned yellow, a shocking discovery for her parents. Further tests were conducted to investigate the cause of her illness, as doctors suspected hepatitis and explored other potential viruses and diseases.
Despite Maisie’s courageous demeanor during the tests, her health continued to decline, leading to her transfer to Leeds General Infirmary for specialized treatment. The medical team informed her family that Maisie was suffering from acute liver failure and urgently needed a transplant.
Unfortunately, Maisie’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and even with a potential donor, the chance of survival was less than one percent. Tragically, Maisie passed away in the early hours after her body failed to respond to treatment during the transplant procedure.
During the inquest, medical professionals expressed their condolences and acknowledged the efforts made to save Maisie’s life. Despite the team’s best efforts, Maisie’s battle with acute liver failure ended tragically on October 2 that year.
