An anxious teenager tragically took his own life after being arrested for driving under the influence, leaving a brief 11-word note for his mother. The inquest into the death of Archie Craven, 19, revealed that he was stopped by police on July 9, 2025, in Swansea due to the smell of cannabis in his car. Archie, a talented photographer, was detained that night after driving from his girlfriend’s place. His mother was informed of the incident by an unknown caller past midnight.
Fearing potential jail time or losing his license, Archie committed suicide the next morning, leaving a short message for his mother, Claire. Archie, who had passed his driving test in March 2024, was described as an enthusiastic driver who would often offer rides in the Citroen C1 gifted by his mother.
The inquest highlighted that Archie struggled with extreme guilt and anxiety, particularly over a past traffic incident that had not led to legal consequences. After returning from London on July 9, 2025, Archie left his girlfriend’s house around 11:30 pm, mentioning he needed to refuel.
Following a police stop that night, Archie tested positive for cannabis and was taken into custody for driving under the influence. Although he was released under investigation after an out-of-court settlement, the prospect of legal consequences deeply affected him, leaving him feeling ashamed and embarrassed.
Despite his mother’s confrontation and his reassurance the next morning, Archie’s mental distress led him to take his own life. His girlfriend found him unresponsive at their family home, prompting an immediate call to emergency services. Tragically, Archie was pronounced dead at the scene, with a note instructing not to open the door but to call the police.
Further investigation revealed additional notes addressed to family members and his girlfriend, indicating his troubled state of mind. The police examination confirmed that Archie had researched methods of suicide before his death. The police investigation following his passing concluded no foul play was involved.
The coroner’s inquest, presided over by Mr. Aled Gruffydd, determined the cause of death as suicide, offering condolences to Archie’s family.
