The Grand National’s recent scratchings phase has seen ten horses withdrawn from the race, leaving a field of 34 contenders set to compete at Aintree. Horse racing enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the historic £1 million National, scheduled less than a month away, where top staying chasers will tackle 30 fences over a grueling four-mile, two-and-a-half furlong course.
Since 2024, the field size for the National has remained at 34 horses, down from the previous 40, giving a glimpse of the potential lineup for the event on April 11. Among the recent withdrawals, three horses were pulled leading up to the latest stage, including Grey Dawning, Resplendent Grey, and Gentlemansgame.
Subsequently, seven more horses have been removed from contention, including Western Fold, Croke Park, Better Days Ahead, Search For Glory, Handstands, Pic Roc, and Leave of Absence. This reduction leaves a final field of 34 horses, with the Willie Mullins pair, I Am Maximus and Grangeclare West, leading the pack.
While the current lineup is set, changes may still occur as the event approaches, with some horses potentially opting to compete in the Irish National on April 6 instead. Notable contenders include Haiti Couleurs, a winner of both the Welsh and Irish Nationals, with trainer Rebecca Curtis expressing excitement about his prospects for the Grand National.
Curtis indicated that Haiti Couleurs’ forte lies in National-type races, emphasizing his potential for success at Aintree. The trainer’s plans hinge on the gelding’s fitness and well-being in the coming weeks, with the possibility of a strong showing at the prestigious event.
