More than eight million Thermos-branded travel mugs are under an urgent recall due to safety concerns that have resulted in serious injuries, including cases of blindness. The recall was issued by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission after discovering a dangerous flaw that could cause the lid stopper of the travel mug to forcefully eject when opened. This defect leads to a build-up of pressure inside the container, causing the stopper to be expelled with significant force upon opening.
The issue stems from several models of containers lacking a pressure relief mechanism. The manufacturer has received reports of at least 27 incidents where consumers were struck by the ejecting stopper, resulting in cuts and impact injuries that required medical attention. Tragically, three individuals have experienced permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye by the malfunctioning stopper.
The affected products include the Stainless King food jars and Sportsman food and beverage bottles, totaling approximately 5.8 million food jars and 2.3 million bottles. These items were sold in various retail stores across the US, such as Walmart and Target, as well as online through platforms like Amazon, between March 2008 and July 2024, typically priced around $30. Specifically, the recall covers models like the Stainless King Food Jars (16oz SK3000 and 24oz SK3020 manufactured before July 2023) and the Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles (40oz SK3010).
The products were available in different colors and featured the Thermos logo on the side, with the serial or model number located on the container’s bottom. Consumers who possess these potentially hazardous Thermos products are advised to cease use immediately and contact Thermos directly for a complimentary replacement. Depending on the model, users may need to discard the stopper with photographic evidence or return the item using a provided prepaid shipping label. The products were made in China and Malaysia. For further assistance or inquiries, individuals are encouraged to reach out to Thermos through their website or customer support line.
