“Three Detained for Espionage Amid China Probe”

Published on

Three individuals have been detained on suspicion of espionage activities linked to a foreign country. The Metropolitan Police disclosed that the suspects, aged 39, 43, and 68, were taken into custody today by counter-terrorism units in London and Wales for allegedly aiding a foreign intelligence agency. The investigation is connected to China.

The three men are currently held in custody, and searches have been conducted at the locations of their arrests, as confirmed by the authorities.

According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police, the arrests are part of a Counter Terrorism Policing inquiry into suspected violations of the National Security Act. The individuals were apprehended on Wednesday, March 4, on suspicion of collaborating with a foreign intelligence service, as outlined in the National Security Act of 2023, with China being the focal point of the investigation.

Commander Helen Flanagan, the Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, emphasized that the arrests are the outcome of a proactive investigation, noting that there is no immediate or direct threat to the public. Flanagan mentioned the rise in national security cases in recent years and highlighted the collaborative efforts with partners to safeguard the nation and combat illicit activities effectively.

The police also mentioned that the detectives from CTP London arrested the three individuals under PACE and conducted searches at multiple addresses as part of the ongoing investigation. The support from CTP Wales and CTP Scotland was crucial in the arrests and search operations.

In a parliamentary update, security minister Dan Jarvis cautioned that severe repercussions await if it is confirmed that China meddled in UK sovereign affairs. Jarvis affirmed that the investigation is linked to China and foreign interference targeting UK democracy. He assured MPs that stringent measures will be taken against any proven attempts by China to disrupt UK sovereignty.

The National Security Act equips intelligence agencies and law enforcement with contemporary legal tools to combat state threats effectively. The successful actions taken by counter-terrorism police serve as a testament to the efficacy of the legislation in safeguarding national security.
